Perspective…

Black Cotton is about perspective. Yes, it is set in an alternate reality where the social order of white and black is reversed, but because of that, it offers each reader the opportunity to see our world in a different way. That is the amazing thing about storytelling… How it can become a mirror for us. Patrick, myself, Marco, and all of the creative team set out to tell this kind of story through the wonderful medium of comics — because comics are visual and, if I may add, the human brain processes data though images. 

We truly hope that each reader takes the opportunity to not only enjoy Black Cotton as a comic but also be edified by it. I don’t want to call that a daunting task, but it can be. Black Cotton is a comic that is meant to challenge readers’ perspectives, the same way that it has challenged the creators’, ours, in developing it and writing it. Patrick and I had so many conversations, deep and profound, convos about — identity, implicit bias, double-consciousness, CRT (Critical Race Theory), and about the human condition as a whole. At the end of all of this and hopefully after reading Black Cotton Vol. 1 (Issues 1-6), the same will happen for others.
