Zion Matters…

Zion is the oldest son of Elijah and Jaleesa Cotton, the heir apparent to the Cotton fortune. However, that is not the path he wants. Rather, Zion carries a disgust towards who and what it means to be a Cotton, and thus, his family. Now, that doesn’t mean that he hates his parents, but he definitely dislikes what it means to be a Cotton — what the name stands for. And this is what leads the oldest child and first born son to turn his back on the family business and become a police officer.

One of the most interesting things about Black Cotton is Zion’s nature, who he perceives himself to be versus who he really is… For Zion, it’s a constant battle to not be like his family, that includes his sister and younger brother, both who while they hold their own opinions and perspectives still have not chosen to walk away from the family. It truly begs the question — why Zion feels the needs to escape? Ultimately, it is this pursuit of escape that leads him to the “Officer Involved” shooting of Elizabeth Nightingale that starts this volume, thus forcing him to face the intimate intricacies of his societal identity as a Cotton and what it means to be the Black One Percent in this alternate reality.
